Oh, wow. I wasn't quite 10 when that happened, so I didn't know any of this. However, I remember the excitement in my house and I remember watching this unfold on television. My mom had it playing on TV all day long. What a beautiful story.
I'm looking forward to your article on communism because my understanding is lacking and yet, anytime I hear the argument for a particular system, that has yet to produce more than mass murder, poverty, and corruption, be it communism or something else, and that argument is that it wasn't done properly and it would be different this time I can't help but think BS.
Is it fair or unfair to say that the academic/intellectuals hesitancy to speak honestly about Soviet regime has something to do with the crimes being perpetrated by, and on, similarly pigmented people?
At that moment I was the young mother of a daughter, not yet two years old. I was working at a low-rent libertarian think tank on the wrong side of the Pennsylvania Ave tracks — we could see the dome of the Capitol Building from our windows, but the aroma of the bakery and the grease from the fry basket next door on the first floor was unshakeable. I picked up my young daughter from her daycare, went home to my empty rented house, turned on the evening news, sat playing with and cuddling her on the carpet, and burst into tears as I realized that she would grow up never understanding “duck and cover” as something other than an odd abstract historical artifact.
